The race for New Jersey’s 4th Congressional District, which includes most of Monmouth County, pits the state’s longest-serving House member against a Democrat who has never held office and once worked for the incumbent — when she was a teen.
U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith, 67, a Republican, is ending his 20th term in the House of Representatives, longer than any current New Jersey member.
But his support in the majority-Republican district, which stretches from Trenton across central Jersey to the banks of the Jersey Shore, has consistently fallen in recent elections.
